Deanna Durbin Sings Silent Night

I never miss watching this scene from Lady on a Train (1945) on Christmas Eve. Deanna Durbin's version of Silent Night is so soothing and full of the wonder of the season.

Whatever you believe. Wherever you are tonight. I wish you peace and joy.

  1. Just found my father's diary dated October 1944 written while he was being transported overseas with thousands of other soldiers to fight the Germans in France. He was terribly seasick and he could hear a movie being shown on the deck above him as he laid in his bunk in misery. It was Deanna Durbin singing Silent Night. He said it was the "wrong song to listen to when you're so homesick -- and just sick." He was injured just 2 months later during a heavy mortar attack in France; part of his hand was blown off and he had deep shrapnel wounds in his leg; his best friend took a direct hit and died. I can't imagine what he went through, but my dad was a Christian and I'll bet Deanna's song remained with him and comforted him on some level. Peace to all.
