A Classic Giveaway--Win a Copy of Ava Gardner: The Secret Conversations

Curious about the new Ava Gardner book? Well here's your big chance to check it out! Simon & Schuster has generously offered to send two lucky readers a copy of this candid look at a talented, big-hearted and delightfully foul-mouthed star of the golden age of Hollywood.

How to enter? Tell me what your favorite Ava Gardner flicks are, and why, in the comments section of this post. It's easy!

As I am frightened by all the blogging contest widgets out there, the winners will be drawn old-school-style from a large, black sunhat which would probably would have looked amaaazing on Ms. Ava.

You have until 11:59 PST Thursday, July 11 to enter. Entries are limited to the continental US. I will announce the winners in my Classic Links post on Friday, July 12.

Good luck!

  1. Without a doubt "The Night of the Iguana", just because it was the first time I saw her "act". Before it I thought she was just gorgeous but dull. I enjoyed her in "Mogambo" and "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" but on pure "movie star" levels.

  2. I'm a big fan of Ava's '40s movies at MGM, like THE BRIBE, THE HUCKSTERS, and EAST SIDE, WEST SIDE, and I love THE KILLERS (for Universal) too...she was so gorgeous and an interesting actress too. I've always enjoyed her. I also think her performance as Julie in SHOW BOAT is underrated.

    Best wishes,
    Laura

  3. My favorite Ava film has to be her Roddy McDowall-directed movie 'Tam Lin'. I love the rumors that she & co-star Ian McShane had a fling during the shoot, as he was 20-years her junior. Joanna Lumley says Ava loved Ian's "dark-eyed gypsy" looks. In her 40's she could still seduce anyone she chose!

  4. I loved Ava Gardner in MOGAMBO, because she is gorgeous in it, it stars Clark Gable who is a favorite of mine and it is a remake of one of my all time favorites, RED DUST. I also loved her in The HUCKSTERS - again it's that Gable/Gardner pairing. I loved how she played the showgirl with a big heart and how she "didn't want to come between two little kids and their Indian outfits" when Victor wanted to buy the costumes for Deborah Kerr's kids. She was also amazing in The BRIBE, The KILLERS and EAST, SIDE, WEST SIDE. She reminds me of the no BS attitude that Jean Harlow had. Beautiful woman who didn't pull any punches. Amazing!

  5. My absolute favorite Ava Gardner film is NIGHT OF THE IGUANA. Ava plays a no nonsense woman, who does what she has to do to survive and has fun doing it! She depicts a strong woman not taking anything from anyone, just like I imagined Ava herself to be. She was also fabulous in MOGAMBO...a sublime combination of beauty, strength & confidence. We need more female characters like those that Ava made famous.

  6. Thank you for your entries! It was fun to read about your favorites. Like some of you, my favorite Gardner performance is in Night of the Iguana. It's the first time she really seemed to relax into her role. I also love her astonishing movie star glamour in Pandora and the Flying Dutchman.

I have drawn the winners from my big, black straw hat. Congratulations to Jose Solis and Lulu! Get all the details here: http://www.aclassicmovieblog.com/2013/07/classic-links-and-giveaway-winners.html
